Evaluation of Patient Satisfaction After Orthognathic Surgery in Skeletal Class 2 and Class 3 Malocclusions
Main Article Content
Abstract
Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate patient satisfaction after orthognathic surgery and to compare satisfaction levels between different skeletal classifications (Class 2 and Class 3).
Methods: A total of 54 patients who underwent orthognathic surgery were included in this retrospective study. Participants were grouped according to skeletal classification as Class 2 (n=12) and Class 3 (n=42). Postoperative patient satisfaction was evaluated using a structured questionnaire consisting of 9 items rated on a 7-point Likert scale. Intergroup comparisons between Class 2 and Class 3 individuals were performed using the Mann–Whitney U-test. Effect sizes were calculated using Cohen’s d to assess the magnitude of between-group differences.
Results: Overall postoperative satisfaction was high in both skeletal Class 2 and Class 3 groups. Intergroup comparisons showed no statistically significant differences in willingness to undergo surgery again, recommendation to others, overall surgical satisfaction, occlusion satisfaction, temporomandibular joint/facial pain, or lower lip/chin sensation (P > .05). However, significantly higher satisfaction scores were observed in the Class 3 group for speech, lip posture and competence, and breathing (P < .05); however, these findings should be interpreted with caution given the multiple questionnaire comparisons performed. Effect size analysis demonstrated moderate effects for speech and breathing satisfaction and a large effect for lip posture and competence.
Conclusion: It has been determined that patient satisfaction after orthognathic surgery is generally at a high level. This treatment method, which provides aesthetic and functional gains together, has a positive effect on the quality of life of individuals.
